Lesson 8 – Capstone 1: Silhouettes

Two silhouette profiles face each other, one black with a white thought bubble reading “I hope to use my sketchbook everyday,” and the other white with a black thought bubble reading “I want to use watercolor more.”

In this lesson, students will combine everything they have learned about how artists use their materials in order to create their first self-portrait.

A red and white paper cutout shows symmetrical abstract shapes

This lesson is an introduction to the concept of negative and positive space in art, which describes the space around the subject of an art piece (negative) and the subject itself (positive).
